UC Irvine ranks among the top 10 U.S. universities – public and private – in the number of undergraduate applications. UCI offers 87 undergraduate degree programs, as well as 59 master's; an M.D., Ed.D. and J.D.; and 46 Ph.D. programs.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants whose native language is not English, and whose high school or college/university education was in a country where the language of instruction was not English, must provide evidence of English proficiency to be successful in university studies at UCI.

Acceptable examinations and scores:

  • The minimum accepted score for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is 80 on the Internet-based test, and 550 on the paper-based test;
  • Score 3, 4 or 5 on the AP examination in English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition;
  • Score 5, 6 or 7 on the IB Higher Level Examination in English (Language A);
  • Score 6 or higher on the IB Standard Level Examination in English (Language A);
  • Score 7 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS);
  • Score a combined 30 or higher on the ACT English and Writing Tests;
  • Score 560 or higher on the SAT Reasoning Test, Writing section.

Note: The English Language Proficiency Test Requirement is waived with two UC transferable English Composition courses (not ESL) taken at a regionally accredited U.S. college/university with grades of C or better.

You may apply to one or more of the University of California's nine campuses using a single online application. Students may prepare their application as early as October 1.

When to Apply

The application filing period is November 1 – 30, 2013 for fall quarter 2014.

UC Irvine does not accept applications for winter or spring quarters.

Choosing a Major

You will need to designate a major on your application. Not sure what you want to major in? If you are a freshman applicant, you can apply as an undeclared major within a specific school or as undecided/undeclared if uncertain about choosing a particular field.

Submitting Your Application

Once you have completed the online application, submit it along with the nonrefundable application fee of $70 for domestic applicants or $80 for international applicants. The application fee entitles you to apply to one UC campus – if you apply to more than one campus you must pay an additional $70/$80 for each campus that you select.

If information changes after you have submitted your application — such as your address, current school, in-progress or planned coursework, or other items on your application — you must notify UC Irvine's Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools using the Message Center on your MyAdmission portal.
